It has become popular to use holdbacks as stand alone drapery hardware pieces. You can create a beautiful window treatment using only holdbacks and your drapery fabric. Install your holdbacks around your window, typically to the left and right of the window frame, and you can also put one or two above. Then, just gently drape the curtain fabric around and between the holdbacks.
Make sure to consider the thickness of your fabric when selecting your holdbacks. You'll want to make sure that the holdback you choose has a projection large enough to hold your curtain fabric when it's gathered together. If you are going to use the holdback as a tieback, you'll need to use a decorative rope or chain to gather the fabric around the holdback. Projection is also important if there are other items in your room, like a sofa or cabinet, near the area where your holdback will be installed. Double check to make sure that the projection of the holdback won't interfere with other items or furniture in your room.
You might want to consider a contrasting color for your holdback. For example, if your drapery rods have a dark stain, you could use bright gold or silver for your holdbacks to make them stand out.
